Today, the Stephanian Ottery AFC family mourns the passing of one of its most cherished icons. Pedro Meyer, a name etched into the very soul of our club, has been called to rest in God's eternal kingdom. His life was a testament to the power of sport—not just as a game, but as a force for unity, identity, and justice.

Pedro’s journey with Stephs began as a young footballer, where he quickly became part of the legendary 1st team that lifted the Maggot Trophy in 1963. That victory remains one of the most celebrated moments in our club’s 101-year history, a symbol of pride and excellence that helped shape the Stephs brand into a respected institution within Cape Town’s football fraternity. Pedro’s exploits on the pitch were more than just athletic achievements—they were foundational to our football identity.

Yet, it was in the realm of table tennis where Pedro Meyer’s legacy would transcend sport and enter the annals of political and cultural history. From the humble streets of Loader Street, he helped birth the Stephanian Table Tennis Club—a beacon of resistance and excellence in the non-racial sporting movement during apartheid. In an era defined by oppression, Pedro’s fiery spirit and unwavering conviction turned table tennis into a tool of defiance against unjust laws. The Meyer name became synonymous not only with sporting prowess but with moral courage and community leadership.

Pedro Meyer was more than an athlete. He was a servant of God, a mentor, a pioneer, and a symbol of hope. His life cannot be summed up in mere words, but his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he inspired. Every child who laces up their boots at the Clubhouse, every rally played on a table in Loader Street, carries a piece of Pedro’s spirit.

To Pedro Meyer, we say thank you. Thank you for your contributions to our club, to our community, and to our country. May you rest in eternal peace. We salute you.
