How has the preseason training been going for the team so far?
Preseason has been productive. The players have shown commitment, working hard and proving they’re ready for the challenge. The coaches have implemented specific expectations regarding gameplay and mindset, and the progress was evident in our recent friendly match. With another week of preparation ahead, I’m confident the boys will give it their all to be ready for the first game.
What specific areas have you focused on improving during the preseason?
I’ve been focusing on strengthening my body to ensure my muscles are conditioned to withstand the physical demands of the game. After last season’s tendon injury in my shoulder, it’s been as much a mental battle as a physical one. Fitness has become critical for building my mental readiness as well.
How do you feel about the team’s overall fitness and readiness for the upcoming season?
Fitness is pivotal for our success, and judging from our last performance, we’re heading in the right direction. Right now, we’re a balanced unit, but adding a few more players would help us build depth for the long season ahead. Mental fitness, however, will play the most significant role—it’s about making the right decisions at the crucial moments. Thankfully, our coaches have introduced effective recovery methods, including ice baths and gym sessions, to help us perform at our best.

Are there any new players or strategies that you’re particularly excited about this season?
The inclusion of young players is undoubtedly the most exciting aspect of this season. It reflects the club’s forward-thinking approach, entrusting these boys with significant responsibility. I’m eager to see them grow and thrive. For them to succeed, they just need to enjoy the game and express themselves. We’re here to support and encourage them along the way.
What are your primary goals for the team this year, both as a coach and a player?
As a goalkeeper coach, my main goal is to give my goalkeepers a strong foundation based on the basics, which will lead to success. I want them to feel confident and comfortable in this demanding position. In my time here, I’ve already seen promising talent in Matthew—a hardworking and talented young goalkeeper who continues to make me proud.
As a player, my focus is on staying injury-free, which has been a consistent challenge throughout my career. By the grace of God, I believe I’m covered. Beyond that, I want to be a dependable teammate, always giving my best, encouraging, and guiding the team to success.
How do you plan to balance your dual role as a senior goalkeeper and coach?
I work closely with my U16/U18 goalkeepers during senior sessions, while I train the U12/U14 goalkeepers separately on Tuesdays before my session. On game days, I monitor all goalkeepers to assess their growth. Coaching helps me stay connected to the fundamentals of the game, grounding me and allowing me to identify strengths and weaknesses in my own performance.
What challenges do you anticipate facing this season, and how do you plan to overcome them?
Winter in Cape Town often leaves fields waterlogged and unplayable. As a result, the league has condensed the schedule, meaning we’ll sometimes play two games in four days. This will undoubtedly test our endurance. The coaching staff has emphasized recovery strategies, but the players will also need to maintain professionalism by eating well and resting during downtime.
How do you motivate the players to stay focused and perform at their best throughout the season?
My strength and encouragement come from my faith. God is my Lord and Savior, and through Him, all things are possible. This faith inspires me and, I hope, the players as well.
What role do you see the reserve team playing in the club’s overall success this year?
The reserve team plays a crucial role in building depth within the squad. By competing for spots in the starting eleven, they push the first team to perform at their best. Their contributions foster a competitive atmosphere that benefits the entire club.
How do you measure success for yourself and the team beyond just wins and losses?
Success takes many forms, but for me, it’s about growth—both individually and as a unit. Football has given me lifelong friendships, and I hope this team can achieve the same level of camaraderie. If we can become a family—brothers in arms—we’ll be unstoppable.
One goal, one dream, one team.
If you had to choose, would you go for a classic Cape Town Gatsby or a KFC Burger meal?
Honestly, if you knew what KFC was made of, you’d probably avoid it! Nothing beats a Cosy Corner chargrilled chicken Gatsby. Geba for the win!
