Player Spotlight: Hayden Whittaker (U16) Stephanian Ottery AFC

This season has seen many standout performances, but few as consistently impressive as those from U16 rising star, Hayden Whittaker. We sat down with him to talk about his journey so far, his mindset on the pitch, and what it means to give back to the club.

Q: How would you describe your performance this season?

“This season, I've seen real growth in my performance—both technically and mentally. I've contributed to the team with goals, assists, strong defensive work, and playmaking. Sure, I have my off days, but overall, I feel like I've stepped up as a reliable and impactful player this season.”

Q: What’s been your most memorable moment on the field?

“The day I scored four goals and provided three assists in a single game. That match reminded me why I love soccer and showed me what I’m capable of when I stay focused and give my all.”

Q: When did the team really come together this season?

“Definitely when we played Edgemead. They pushed us hard and made us fight for every opportunity. We had to dig deep and start playing real football. That game brought out our team’s fighting spirit.”

Q: What’s one key area you’ve worked on?

“Not playing scared. In the past, I hesitated going into challenges, and that’s when I’d get injured. This season, I’ve focused on staying confident in those moments.”

Q: What’s the team spirit like in the dressing room?

“Always a good vibe. We walk into that dressing room with a positive mindset—never a negative one.”

Q: What are your goals for the rest of the season? “Personally, I want to push myself to win at least one trophy. I’m focused on improving every part of my game to make that happen. For the team, the goal is to play as a unit and qualify for the Super Cup.”

Q: How was your experience with the Each One Teach One program, working with the U8s?

“It’s been a really rewarding experience. At first, I didn’t realize how much patience and creativity it takes to coach younger kids. I learned quickly that it’s not just about teaching skills—it’s also about making the game fun and helping them build confidence. It reminded me why I started playing in the first place.”

Q: Has working with the younger players changed your mindset?

“Definitely. It made me realize that I’m not just a player—I’m a role model. It showed me the kind of impact I can have off the field too. It also helped me reflect on my own playing style, especially the importance of composure and decision-making.”

Q: Who has been the toughest opponent so far?

“Nova National. They don’t give you space to play, they close down quickly, and they’re very physical.”

Q: And just for fun... Macdonald’s or Burger King?

“Macdonald’s—and my go-to order is the Big Mac meal.”

We’re proud of Hayden’s growth and commitment on and off the field. His story is a reminder of the values we stand for as a club: passion, persistence, and paying it forward.
