Stephs U14 put in a determined defensive display but were ultimately beaten 3-0 by a strong Kuilsriver side on Saturday.
The visitors enjoyed more of the ball throughout the contest and created the better chances, but Stephs remained competitive for long periods, particularly during an encouraging first-half performance. Possession was almost evenly shared before the break, with Stephs recording 47.6% of the ball and limiting Kuilsriver to a single goal.
The second half proved more challenging as Kuilsriver increased their control of the game. The visitors enjoyed 64.4% possession after the interval and added two further goals to secure the result.
Despite the scoreline, Stephs showed tremendous commitment without the ball. The team registered an impressive 61 tackles and 14 interceptions, illustrating the players' willingness to work hard for one another and stay in the contest under sustained pressure.
The defensive effort was further highlighted by an outstanding goalkeeping performance. The Stephs goalkeeper was called into action repeatedly and finished the match with 13 saves, helping to keep the team within reach despite Kuilsriver creating 18 attempts on goal.
Going forward, Stephs found opportunities more difficult to come by. The team completed 136 passes compared to Kuilsriver's 183 but struggled to turn possession into sustained attacking pressure. Only 15 completed passes were recorded in the attacking third, while Stephs managed four attempts on goal, with three of those efforts coming from outside the penalty area.

The statistics suggest the next area of development will be creating more support around the forwards and finding ways to progress the ball into dangerous attacking areas more consistently. Improving ball retention after regaining possession and maintaining defensive compactness when under pressure will also be key focus areas for the squad.
While the result did not go their way, the U14s showed plenty of character, resilience, and determination throughout the match. With the same commitment and continued progress in possession, the team will look to turn performances like this into positive results in the weeks ahead.
